This short video features Deanne Kasokeo talking about her art work "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" which was displayed in an exhibition called "Honoring the Child". The exhibition included paintings, sculptures and mixed media pieces made in response to the Residential School experience. We have created this video to accompany a Living Sky School Division project called "From Shared History to Shared Hope". It our belief that we need acknowledge the history of residential schools and the continued impact on society, however, we also want to bring our focus the the hope we share for the future.
Shared History to Shared Hope
The story of residential schools in Canada is a long and complex one. In the government's effort to assimilate First Nations people children were put into residential schools, often far from home, taught to speak English and to live according to expectations of the newcomers. As a result, we have traumatic stories of abuse, loss of language, loss of culture, heartache and family break down. This is our shared history, one that cannot be ignored. so that we might have better understanding of the issues we share today.
